In the early 1980s, Shawn Stussy was handcrafted surfboard shaper working out of Laguna Beach, California. To brand his custom boards, he scrawled his surname in a loose, stylized marker script inspired by graffiti handstyles, punk album art, and abstract hand-lettering.
