Does Online EMDR Therapy Really Work

What the research shows

Telehealth EMDR was found to achieve PTSD outcomes similar to in-person treatment in a multisite review of 279 veterans. A 2025 study on generalized anxiety found that both face-to-face and web-based EMDR significantly improved symptoms compared to the waiting list.

A review of 16 remote EMDR studies with 1,231 participants found that EMDR therapy online can greatly lower PTSD, anxiety, and depression. It was just as effective as in-office therapy for PCL-5 scores.

Research showed that the treatment worked just as well, whether it was in-person or via video. Meanwhile, the online EMDR 2.0 group protocol helped to reduce anxiety and stress among survivors of road accidents

How A Virtual Session Feels

You do not really have to get a light bar in your workplace. Therapists use screen dots, audio tones or guide self-tapping during a home session, which means no commute time for you. Some clinicians say that working online can be riskier during an active crisis. This is because you’re not in the same room as the person. Good therapists usually begin with sourcing, training in grounding and having a crisis plan at hand

What To Expect From A Provider

Find therapists who are licensed and have at least completed the basic level EMDR training. They should have clear privacy policies and a backup plan for technical issues.
