Can A Steel Cord Conveyor Belt Handle Bulk Materials?

Moving several tons of material across a long conveyor route is not quite the same as moving a few boxes. The belt has to carry the load, withstand tension, and travel steadily around large pulleys. A Steel cord conveyor belt is designed for these demanding conditions, using steel cords inside the belt carcass to provide high tensile strength.

Unlike fabric-reinforced belts that rely on layers of textile reinforcement, a Steel cord conveyor belt uses longitudinal steel cords as its main load-bearing structure. These cords run along the belt length and are embedded in rubber. The arrangement allows the belt to handle substantial tensile forces while maintaining a relatively compact construction.

The steel cords are only part of the story. Rubber covers surround the internal reinforcement and provide the surfaces that interact with bulk materials and conveyor components. The upper cover contacts the conveyed material, while the lower section travels across idlers and around pulleys. Cover thickness and rubber formulation can be selected according to the application.

Long-distance conveying is one area where steel cord construction becomes particularly useful. Mining, quarrying, ports, power plants, and large material-handling systems can involve conveyor routes stretching over considerable distances. A belt needs sufficient longitudinal strength to manage the forces created by its own weight, transported material, acceleration, and elevation changes.

Splice design deserves attention too. A long conveyor belt usually needs to form a continuous loop, meaning the belt ends must be joined. Steel cord belts can use vulcanized splicing methods that connect the internal cords and rubber layers into a continuous structure. The splice geometry needs to match the belt construction.

Belt width and cord arrangement can vary according to the conveyor system. Wider belts can carry larger quantities of material, while different cord diameters and spacing arrangements can provide different tensile ratings. The correct specification depends on conveyor length, material load, belt speed, incline, and drive configuration.

The rubber cover also has to match the material being transported. Crushed rock and ore can create repeated impact and abrasion, whereas coal or other bulk materials may create different loading conditions. Temperature and material characteristics can also influence rubber compound selection.

A Steel cord conveyor belt works alongside pulleys, idlers, take-up systems, and drive equipment. Pulley diameter is particularly relevant because the belt repeatedly bends around the pulley. The belt structure therefore needs to correspond to the conveyor's mechanical arrangement.
