Asthma During Monsoon Season: Symptoms, Triggers, and Prevention

Monsoon season brings relief from summer heat, but increased humidity, dampness, mould, respiratory infections, and sudden weather changes can make asthma symptoms worse. People with asthma may experience more frequent coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath during rainy weather. High humidity, thunderstorms, mould, and other environmental allergens are recognised asthma triggers.

Why Does Asthma Worsen During Monsoon?

During the monsoon season, moisture can collect inside homes, especially around bathrooms, kitchens, ceilings, carpets, and poorly ventilated rooms. Damp conditions encourage mould growth, which can irritate the airways and trigger asthma symptoms.

Dust mites may also increase in humid environments. In addition, seasonal viral infections such as flu, COVID-19, and RSV can cause serious breathing problems and asthma attacks in susceptible individuals.

Common monsoon asthma triggers include:

  • Indoor dampness and mould
  • High humidity and changing temperatures
  • Dust mites in bedding, carpets, and curtains
  • Smoke, perfumes, sprays, and strong cleaning products
  • Viral respiratory infections
  • Outdoor pollution and thunderstorm-related weather changes

Warning Signs of Poorly Controlled Asthma

Asthma symptoms should not be ignored, particularly when they become more frequent during rainy weather. Warning signs include:

  • Persistent coughing, especially at night
  • Wheezing or a whistling sound while breathing
  • Tightness or pressure in the chest
  • Shortness of breath during normal activities
  • Frequent need for a reliever inhaler
  • Waking up because of coughing or breathing difficulty

Asthma is generally assessed through a medical history, physical examination, and breathing tests such as spirometry.

How to Control Asthma During Monsoon

Keep Your Home Dry

Repair leaking roofs, pipes, and windows promptly. Dry wet areas and avoid allowing water to remain on floors or walls. Clean visible mould safely and address the source of moisture so that it does not return.

Where possible, keep indoor humidity at or below 50% by using proper ventilation, air conditioning, exhaust fans, or a dehumidifier.

Reduce Indoor Allergens

Wash bedding regularly and allow mattresses, curtains, and rugs to dry completely. Clean air-conditioner filters and avoid storing damp clothes inside closed rooms. Minimise heavy carpets and other materials that easily collect moisture and dust.

Follow Your Asthma Treatment Plan

Take controller medication exactly as prescribed, even when you feel well. Keep your reliever inhaler accessible and ensure that it has not expired. Do not stop, increase, or replace prescribed asthma medicines without consulting a qualified doctor.

Ask your doctor to prepare a written asthma action plan explaining which medicines to use, how to recognise worsening symptoms, and when to seek emergency care.

Protect Yourself From Infections

Wash your hands regularly, avoid close contact with people who have respiratory infections, and discuss appropriate vaccinations with your doctor. Respiratory infections can make asthma attacks more severe.

When Is Emergency Help Needed?

Seek urgent medical help if breathing becomes extremely difficult, the reliever inhaler is not providing the expected relief, the person cannot speak comfortably, appears exhausted or confused, or develops bluish lips or skin. A severe asthma attack can be life-threatening.

For persistent coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or breathing difficulty, consult a respiratory specialist. When searching for the best pulmonologist in Lahore, choose a qualified doctor who can assess your triggers, check lung function, review inhaler technique, and create an individual treatment plan.
