The e-Challan system is an initiative by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) designed to digitize traffic enforcement across India. It replaces traditional paper tickets with an automated, transparent mechanism for penalizing traffic violations.

How the e-Challan System Works

Detection: High-definition CCTV cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, speed guns, and traffic police handheld devices capture real-time traffic violations.
Data Integration: The captured image or video is linked to the national Vahan (vehicle registration) and Sarathi (driving license) databases.
Issuance & Notification: An electronic ticket containing the offense details, timestamp, location, and fine amount is generated. The vehicle owner receives an SMS notification on their registered mobile number.

Key Fines for Common Violations

Fine amounts are standardized under the Motor Vehicles Act:

Traffic Violation	Typical Fine Amount
Over-speeding	₹1,000 – ₹2,000 (Light Motor Vehicles)
Driving Without Seatbelt / Helmet	₹1,000 + Possible DL Suspension
Red Light Jumping	₹1,000 – ₹5,000
Driving Without Valid Insurance	₹2,000 (First Offense)
Using Mobile Phone While Driving	₹1,000 – ₹5,000
